Diagnosing TMJ/TMD

Before we can treat your TMJD, we will need to diagnose the underlying cause of your symptoms, the most common of which are lockjaw, ringing in the ear, pain in the upper back and shoulder areas, and chronic headaches. To do this, Dr. Virga or Dr. Girardi will thoroughly examine your jaw joints and mouth, and we may take either X-rays or a cone beam CT image of your facial structure. Based on our findings, we may recommend either equilibration or a customized occlusal splint.

Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments

If your bite is uneven, it can cause one or both of your jaw joints to sustain more force and tension than is natural. As a result, dysfunction occurs. If this is caused by an improperly fitted restoration or misshapen tooth, we can adjust the fit and shape with equilibration to even out the bite. This will help reduce strain on the facial muscles and temporomandibular joints.

Occlusal Splints

If you experience nightly grinding that’s exacerbating your TMJD symptoms, we can provide you with an occlusal splint that’s made just for you. You’ll wear it at night to keep your teeth from becoming damaged from the grinding and to shift your jaw to rest in its ideal position. This will help minimize tension in your joints and facial muscles, and when worn regularly, improve your daily symptoms.
